Can these bones live?
Mar 6th, 2008
I’m sure there is a scene in one of the Lord of Rings films that features an army coming alive. Can anybody remember which one, to save me scanning the entire trilogy? The lectionary this week includes the raising of Lazarus and the valley of bones in Ezekiel 37. God asks Ezekiel if he thinks a valley full of bones can come to life. Then God breathes his spirit and wow!
This week’s text picture goes with the bones story. Dem bones, dem bones…

Hi Tim,
We just watched the entire LOTR Trilogy over Christmas break last year.
There is a scene in last part of the first movie (The Fellowship of the Rings) where Saruman (the white haired guy who battles Gandalf) builds an army of Oruki (orcs that can stand the daylight).
More of this shows up in the second film where Saruman sends his army to go fight the people of Rohan at Helm’s deep.
Is that what you’re looking for?
Thanks Craig.
I suspect the scene you’re actually thinking of is from Return of the King (the third film) where Aragorn goes and calls the undead army from out of the mountains to fight for the King, and thus revoke the curse on them (and also features a huge “waterfall” of skulls as they exit the mountain).
Ah, yes that’s the one.
