Update to EPSILON and UPSILON themes

Update to EPSILON and UPSILON themes

Nov 3rd, 2007 by Tim 26

Thanks to Rena, who brought my attention to a problem with these two themes in Internet Explorer 6. The themes were prone to the famous text creep bug in IE6 when you have nested tags that have both a left border and bottom margin. I think Rena, after a late night or two found the Holy hack got round it. But these issues are usually avoidable and so I have at last tracked this little problem down having found a PC still running IE6. And it is very simple.

If you are already using these themes the bug is caused by the .post blockquote statement in the style sheet. You can either remove the left border or rework the margins to lose the bottom margin. In my updated versions I have simply removed the line, ” margin: 5px” altogether.

Are there other errors with IE and your theme. I am having trouble with posts with images “leaking” words into the right sidebar. Also, the footer is broken up by a white post background.

There maybe, but I haven’t seen these. Where do you have the theme running?

    Hi Tim,
I really like your themes as specialy the EPSILON/UPSILON themes are great. Is it possible that you send me you basic image files (.psd or in the equal file-format for GIMP) because I would like to change some color details and it would be easier that way.
Thanks a lot for distributing your themes - I would never reach to create a whole theme,
    be blessed,
    Timotheus

I have modified the header of the Upsilon theme on my PC but the logo and title for my Church Name (5 words) just fits with the Home and About Navigation bar close on the right. However if I add more pages the name is covered by the expanding Navbar. Is there a way I can get the title to text wrap so that it is not blocked by the Navbar?I could email you a picture of it so you can see what I am talking about.
How do you enter the events in the sidebar under upcoming events?
I will inform you when the site is ready to go live.
Thanks for all you are doing to help the church.

It seems that the Gallery collides with Lightbox2 - Lightbox works as advertised but the Gallery stops launching its images. Is this a known problem? Any fixes?

Thanks for a great theme. Not finished with our site yet, but here is a first cut: http://ccc-southperry.com

The problem is that Gallery uses the Javascript lib called MooTools and Lightbox uses a different one. They are not compatible unfortunately.

You need to a lightbox rip off written with MooTools. I think there is even a WP plugin called ThickBox, which in theory should work.

Loving the EPSILON theme. I would love to change the text in the transparent bar on the gallery, but I cant…..HELP! :-)
Also changing the link destination of the pictures when clicked on.

Any help from you or your readers would be great.
    All the best

Thanks - I discovered that Lytebox does the job alongside Smooth Gallery.

  9. 9 Tim said:

Thanks Russ. That is fantastic. I’d given up trying to find something that would work along side SmoothGallery.

Others can get the WP plugin here.

Anyone can tell me how to text wrap the title in the header. My title using my church name is so long it hides behind the home and about nav buttons. I reduced the font size etc. and got it to just fit but if I add another page the navbar expands and covers the end portion of the title text. I woulsd appreciate some advice on this one as no one has replied to my previous comments Nov. 8th.
Also I still havent figured out how to post events using the RSevents Plugin. Any advice here?

  11. 11 Tim said:

Change the width and height of the header in the stylesheet to suite.

If you have RS Event installed, go to the very bottom of the Post Write page and add an RS Event date/time in the right sidebar.

  12. 12 Leon said:

    Tim,
I managed to get the RS event sorted out, Iwas leaving out the title of the post so only the date was showing in the sidebar and not the event. I used the event name for title and it now shows in the sidebar.
I tried widening the header but it put all the other boxes with the gallery photos and the sidebar out of place. Could not figure how to adjust those to fit in the widened box. Eventually I used a smaller size font for the title until I run out of space when I add more pages.

    Hi All,

Iam still fiddling with my Upsilon theme blog on my PC using Xaamplite but I have a new problem I am not sure how to fix.
I had made some posts with events before I figured out how it works.
Now I have an old entry showing up in my events page when I view my site but the text is not seen in any of my posts or pages in my dashboard so I can’t find it to get rid of it.

I tried restarting the database and refreshing the browser but it is still there. I does not appear in the event sidebar, just in the webpage events page.

    Any suggestions?

    hi All,
I finally put the site online but the photo gallery is not showing. My file structure online is a little different from my PC version in that everything is loaded in the public_html folder while on my PC I have a Wordpress file in htdocs in Xampp.
Could this be the reason the photo gallery is not showing? Any suggestions how to fix this.
On my PC I have Wordpress 2.[1] 2.1 and the website is verion 2.[1]3.1.
The RS event plugin also malfunctioned on the website although it works good on my PC version.

    Tim,

I got the RS Event pugin to work by reloading all plugins.
However I still cannot find out how to get the Smoothgallery to load the pictures. I have checked through the extra, header and style files. I have tried changing permissions on the pictures to be loaded, I have reverted to verion 2.2 of Wordpress, all to no avail. I am using lunarpages as host.
It still works fine on my laptop and I had uploaded the same laptop files to the site.
Can you or anyone else help me with any set of suggestions to try? you can take a look at the site. Did you have to do anything special for it to work on the SHINE website? The Epsilon theme displays the picture ok so I know its a problem with the gallery or my host missing something required.

  17. 17 Tim said:

I had a look at your site. The gallery simply takes the url of the images from the HTML code in extra.php. From where I am the images you have specified can not be found. To test it yourself, take the url of any of your images and copy it into the address bar of your browser. If your browser can’t find them, the gallery won’t either.

If the images are in the right place and you have the urls correct, try turning off the friendly permalinks. It may have something to do with how you set them up.

  18. 18 Leon said:

    Tim,

I did as you said and my pictures appear in my browser.
I changed my permalinks to default and that did not work either.
The thing is the site works ok on my Windows PC using Xampp.
Can you recommend some webhosts on which this theme works ok as I do not think Lunarpages knows how to help me with this one.
I have tried other suggestions from this site and the smoothgallery site but without success.
I am still trying to compare source codes from other sites using the theme with mine but yet to find a solution.
The load bar in the middle of the extrasidebar suggests it is trying to load the pictures but is prevented from doing so.
Are there any permissions that should be set on the image files and folders?
Any other suggestions as I am not ready to give up yet even though this is my first site attempt.

It is strange, because it really doesn’t depend on your server’s functionality. As long as the images are accessible to read, SmoothGallery throws them up. That is the beauty of it, because instead of an ugly Flash movie it is just some standard HTML code.

I still can’t see your images. I get a 404 error. My browser cannot see your pictures, so SmoothGallery won’t work either.

The url of the image I’m trying to find is: here. This gives a 404 error - not found.

You shouldn’t need to change hosts to get this to work.

    Tim,
with your tip re the checking for the pictures in my browser and another tip re javascript being case sensitive I looked deeper and found work.JPG had capitals for the extension that was why we could not find it. I could see another picture in my browser which had common letter extensions. This was because the extra.php file was looking for common letters. I changed the extensions in the extra.php file to match what was stored on the server and it came up ok. You can see it now. This problem helped me to learn a lot so God worked it for good. Thanks for the help.

    Hey Tim

Nice work with Upsilon and friends. I notice that it uses the SmoothGallery 1.01. Have you played with the 2.0 version that JonDesign has evolved? I am not a programmer but do wonder how easy it would be to upgrade. Any thoughts?

    Be well,

    Jerry

    Hi Tim,

Thanks for the fantastic Epsilon theme. I’ve used it to make a site for a small house in France (in Dutch for now) and I’m running into a problem with navigation. If you click one page in, the sub-menu appears underneath the header image. If you go one click deeper, the sub-menu disappears, which means visitors need to back-button to see it again.

Do you know if it’s possible to keep the sub-menu visible when you go 2 clicks deep ? I’ve hunted around for a solution, but my PHP-knowledge isn’t good enough, I’m afraid. Any thoughts?

    Thanks for your help,

    Peter

I really like the Upsilon theme and am planning on using in an upcoming project. I don’t see any mention of whether or not you require credit links in the footer. Do you?
I’m wondering if each page in the website will show the same slideshow, or is there a way to show different photos in the slideshows on each page?

  24. 24 Kathy said:

And some more questions, what size should the images be if we don’t want them resized dynamically?

What files do I edit if I want to add more images to the slideshow?

Thanks again for a great theme!

  25. 25 Tim said:

it’s all in extra.php inside the gallery div tag.

And yes it would be courtesy to leave the link the footer.
