I want one of these (not)!

christian geekWhy, oh why do we need a Christian version of ubuntu? I can almost see the point of GodTube, but what is it that powers a Christian operating system? And to support the project you can buy your Christian Geek hoodie too.

In case you don’t know what ubunto is, it is a free open source operating system based on Linux. The Christian version apparently comes with a BibleMemorizer, Virtual Rosary integrated using WINE and e-Sword. The only reason I know this isn’t a wind-up is that I have e-sword and it is really very good. So I guess I qualify for the hoodie.

Thanks to Viu for drawing my attention to this.

I am user of Ubuntu default system. I am not reading Bible in english so much, I have my native. So e-sword is a bit pointless for me. But there was good parental controls preloaded for Firefox in CE version. And btw, if someone takes care of making this edition, why not.
You was asking, why we need Ubuntu CE? Reed this http://christianubuntu.blogspot.com/

Viu, thanks. That link is quite amusing. I like the fact that the blog’s author felt he had to explain that the blog is a “joke”.
I suppose I’m not convinced that someone has “taken care” in producing this. It is risky enough to follow an open source development, without then following a branch of one.
Things like parental controls are good, but it isn’t just Christians that want them.

As far as I understand it, Ubuntu CE is stock Ubuntu but with a couple of extra packages and tweaks. I can see it being very useful in rollouts of Ubuntu in churches. Personally I prefer this as an idea to something like Ichthux linux, which is a distro in it’s own right.

sigh… the exclusive Christian Subculture is a problem…. (hangs head in shame). I found this a few weeks ago and had a big old rant to one of my friends who just said “It’s just another flavour” which is a fair comment I suppose.

We use Ubuntu on some of our church machines, there are far better ways of getting controls over the content than using resources that slow the machine down. We are using Smoothwall and Dansguardian to protect the entire network which works very well.
