May be there will be figs this year

Luke 13:1-9
Repent or perish! I have heard that preached before. I’ve even seen people wearing T-shirts with it on. The thing is I’m not sure Jesus meant the same thing as the T-shirt wearers.

As Jesus deals with some of the judgemental thoughts of others in the aftermath of tragedies of his day, he points to a different way of looking at the world. A kingdom to be established not by taking on Pilate or Rome, but a different way. Jesus isn’t talking about hell here, but a choice to go to Jerusalem without the sword.

So Jesus tells another great story about a tree. And just when you think the story is going to be about judgement you find a picture of grace. Its ridiculous to think any vineyard owner would agree to keeping a fruitless tree in his precious soil, but then sometimes God thinks differently to us. May be this year there will be figs on the tree…
