WordPress Driven Church?
May 15th, 2006
I got into WordPress, recognising it was a great solution for church websites. My first WP theme designed specifically for churches has been downloaded 109 times to date too. So I thought I’d keep a note of where WordPress is working for churches. Those using my LivingOS Alpha theme:
- Vincent United Methodist, Minot, USA
- St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, Minot, USA
- Brownley Green Baptist Church, Wythenshawe, UK
- The Church of the Ascension, Maryland, USA
- Whyteleafe Free Church, Surrey UK
And the rest of the WordPress driven church scene….
- Dulles Community Church, Washington DC, USA - well actually TextPattern, but even so, it is impressive.
- Temple Baptist Church, USA
- St. John’s Episcopal church, Colorado, USA
- Joy Mennonite Church, Oklahomam USA
- Village Church, New York, USA
- Ranges Community Church, Australia
- Evangelical Free Church of Bloomington, USA
If you are using WordPress for a church website or have a theme that fits a church application (and are willing to share) then let me know and I’ll include it here.

It’s not a church, but it’s a church-sponsored event… I used/modified the Pool theme for WordPress to put together the site for our local ShareFest event. It’s still in the works, but WP works pretty well for what we need it to do. Anyway, it’s http://www.sharefestpc.org.
Is the Dulles Community Church site you linked to really powered by WordPress? Wow! You’d never know it!
Well, actually Dulles uses TextPattern, but it is very impressive and a good example of what can be achieved with WP or TP.
It’s definitely impressive, whether it’s WP or TP!
Our parent church’s website is built around MovableType, I think. ( http://www.reallifecc.org ) You can ask David Allen, their web guy, if you want to know more.
I’m hoping to redo our church site ( http://www.livinghope.info ) using WP soon. I’m trying to decide on a base theme and set of plugins to make it do everything I want it to. Right now I’m leaning toward a somewhat-modified Kiwi…
Thanks for the link. What I’ve read on your site should be an indication of a few more interesting articles in the future!
[...] I noticed that we had a couple of referrals from ‘Living Open Source’ . They have done a blurb on churches who use wordpress for their webpage, and suprisingly Ranges Community Church was mentioned! [...]
I think your alpha theme is excellent, just what we was looking for, for our new Wordpress powered church website. Keep up the good work! David E.
We just started to use Wordpress at New Song Ministries. Not as powerful as a larger CMS, but much easier to maintain.
Hi Tim, I’m looking for a cool wordpress theme for my church’s website and stumbled across your website.
I like your rss event plugin idea!
do you know if there are any other wp themes suitable for church sites?
happy wp weekend,
nchenga
What theme is “St. John’s” using? I really like the look of their website and it is what I’ve been looking for, for my own Church’s site.
I seems to be their own theme. There is no credit anywhere on the site if not.
It is a very nice theme and is actually very simple. I’m sure there is WP theme out there that can be adapted to suite.
The ‘theme’ is rather specific to our church just at the moment but I have just launched the St John’s Chuch, Owlerton website using Wordpress.
There are a lot of good Wordpress church sites our there aren’t there?! For some crazy reason when I thought I of using Wordpress for a church site I thought I was being quite original and a little bit crazy… it appears I was wrong on at least one of those… Thanks for the links.
